Some games for the Nintendo Wii are being developed especially for children suffering from Cerebral Palsy. They are slower paced than the commercially available games, less complicated, and are designed to help develop muscle control and hand coordination.

Using Wii games to increase motor function in CP victims is the brainchild of the Limbs Alive Project operated at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary. Ten families participated in the game trials.

A recent cash prize will help keep this project alive. Janice Pearse, an occupational therapist, won the 2009 national Rompa Quality of Life award from the Children’s Foundation charity for her involvement in the project.
Children are encouraged to play the games at least 30 minutes a night, sometimes using their non-dominant (weaker) hand. This kind of therapy is fun for the children involved and lets them exercise without a conscious effort.
