According to the Oregonian, a woman whose premature baby died after an emergency Caesarean section has filed a $1.9 million lawsuit against the doctor who treated her.
The woman claims that the doctor failed to give her medication that would have delayed her son’s birth. The lawsuit was filed in the Multnomah County Circuit Court last month.
The woman was reportedly 6 1/2 months pregnant in February 2012 when she went to Providence Seaside Hospital with signs that she was in early labor, according to the Oregonian.
Testing, including ultrasounds, showed that the fetus had normal heartbeats. However, the woman ended up spending 11 hours at the hospital before she was transferred via ambulance to the Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Northwest Portland, which is 74 miles from Seaside.
According to her lawsuit, about an hour after her arrival at St. Vincent, an emergency C-section was performed on the woman, and the baby inside her immediately died.
The woman is suing her doctor at Seaside, the Providence Medical Group and the Northwest Prenatal Center, located in northwest Portland, which allegedly provided the Seaside doctor with medical advice.
The woman claims in her lawsuit that the defendants failed to give her medication to delay labor and failed to continue to use an electronic fetal monitor in the last 2 1/2 hours of her visit at the Seaside hospital.
According to the Oregonian, the woman also claims that the defendants caused her to undergo a T-incision during her C-section, which can reportedly lead to problems with future pregnancies.
The woman is seeking $1.9 million for non-economic damages that include physical disability, “permanent disfigurement,” and the pain and suffering she experienced.
