A New York hospital was ordered to pay a woman more than $17 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit on May 27, 2008. The woman claimed that in 2003 while she delivered a healthy baby girl, there was damage to her organs which ultimately resulted in the removal of a transplanted pancreas she had received in 1995 to help treat diabetes.
Her attorneys claimed that during the Caesarean delivery, due to poor planning, the medical staff cut the connection between her pancreas and bladder. This caused the pancreatic fluid and urine to leak into her abdominal cavity. This fluid, being very acidic, burned her organs, ate through her abdominal wall, and lastly required the removal of her pancreas.

The hospital officials state that they plan to appeal the verdict. While they regret the complications suffered, they still stand behind their decision.
